Oxidation of palytoxins, ovatoxins or ostreocins using periodic acid generates two nitrogen-containing aldehyde fragments; an amino aldehyde common to these toxins, and an amide aldehyde that may vary depending on toxin type.

Among the OVTXs so far detected by high-resolution liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HR- LC-MS), ovatoxin-a (OVTX-a) has emerged as the major toxin produced by O. ovata.[3] It was successfully isolated from O. ovata cultures and structurally identified as a paly- toxin analogue by means of NMR techniques. This study provides the first evaluation of the cytotoxic effects of the recently identified palytoxin (PLTX) analog, ovatoxin-a (OVTX-a), the major toxin produced by Ostreopsis cf. ovata in the Mediterranean Sea. Its increasing detection during Ostreopsis blooms and in seafood highlights the need to characterize its toxic effects and to set up appropriate detection methods.
